CT Plus Jersey is a part of HCT Group – a social enterprise - but what does that mean?

If you have ever bought the Big Issue or a bar of Divine chocolate, heard of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen chain of restaurants, visited the Eden Project or shopped at the Co-op, then you already know a bit about social enterprise: a growing, worldwide movement of businesses that exist to change the world for the better.

A social enterprise is a business that trades to tackle social problems, improve communities, people’s life chances, or the environment - a way of doing business that puts people and the planet first.

Social enterprises exist to make a difference to the communities where they work. They get their money through trade, just like a normal business, but the money they make is reinvested back into the communities where it is earned.

Social enterprises don’t have shareholders and can’t sell out to big business, so they can focus on making their communities better places to live and work. They often work alongside the community to design the services they provide, making sure that people’s needs are really met.

What a refreshing change!

What will that mean in Jersey?

We intend to reinvest money made on the bus contract to develop community transport projects in Jersey.

We also believe that the best way to develop our community services is by working with the community. We’ll be establishing a Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) in Jersey, made up of user groups and other stakeholders. The role of the RAC is to make sure that how we work is meeting the needs of people in Jersey and to help direct how we reinvest any money made from contracts.

Does social enterprise really work?

HCT Group exists to make the communities where we operate better places to live and work. We earn the money to do this through contracts won in the marketplace, but our objective is to have a positive social impact – rather than to make money for shareholders (we don’t have any).

Measuring the impact we have is really important to us. Every year, we publish a detailed account of the difference we’ve made in our social impact report – you can download the most recent one here.
