First Tower Take Over....

First Tower School take over LibertyBus with Biebers Bus Pass

In June 2016, LibertyBus invited pupils in year 5 and 6 throughout the island to take part in a travel workshop. First Tower Primary School were the first to take LibertyBus up on their offer, and this morning 43 children learnt more about our islands bus service using bus passes marked ‘Justin Bieber’, ‘Leo Messi’, ‘Lisa Simpson’, ‘Harry Styles’ and ‘Christiano Ronaldo’.

The campaign has the aim of showing young adults how to safely use the bus and empowering them to feel confident to travel on public transport. This is especially important for those who are getting ready to start secondary school and may be feeling nervous about getting there. As well as this, it also encourages the pupils to be mindful of their carbon footprint from an early age.

The first workshop was taken with 43 First Tower Primary School Year six pupils along the avenue car parks opposite First Tower Primary School.

Paul Morgan, Bus Driver at LibertyBus and a Jersey school Bus Driver of 21 years said ‘I think these workshops are a great idea. Lots of the kids I take are really nervous when they first use the buses. This gives them a bit of a head start and some confidence on their first days at secondary.’

Jess Stanier, Marketing Manger said: ‘We had lots of fun. The pupils all got really involved, trialled using the AvanchiCards, riding the bus safely, getting the bus to stop and we worked out how to get from their parish around the island using our LibertyBus map and the Track My Bus app. It was a very interactive workshop and I think the children enjoyed the quirks like using famous names on bus passes to keep them engaged.’

‘For many teenagers, this time of year can be extremely stressful – leaving the primary school they are comfortable with and moving to a secondary school where everything seems new. By teaching them confidence with travel ahead of the school term, they have the whole of summer to familiarise themselves with how to use the buses - so at least when they start their new school, travelling alone will not also be.

‘The student AvanchiCard is a powerful thing. It provides them with independence, confidence, knowledge and of course the power to visit other areas of our beautiful island - whilst taking responsibility for their eco footprint. If we can encourage young adults to use the bus early on, imagine how we could decrease traffic and congestion on our roads as well as having a generation who, despite their age, are already mindful of their carbon footprint!’

St Johns Primary School are set to complete the workshop tomorrow, and other schools are lined up for the following week. Any schools who have yet to secure a date are welcome to get in touch with Jess Stanier to book their workshops before term is out.

If your school would like to take part in the LibertyBus Travel Workshop, please contact JessStanier@hctgroup.org or call Jess Stanier on 01534 828558 for more information as soon as possible. These workshops are only available for the months of June & July - we are hoping to repeat in 2017.
